Bridge 92297 East Elevation - MHPR RA-SPC-7112-02

Constructed in 1912 by the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway Company, MnDOT Bridge 92297 (MHPR RA-SPC-7112) was a single-span, reinforced concrete, flat slab bridge located near the intersection of Mississippi Street and Cayuga Avenue in Saint Paul. The bridge was designed by C.A.P. Turner (a nationally prominent Minneapolis engineer) and constructed by the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway Company to carry vehicles, pedestrians, and a streetcar line over their railroad line.

Careful exposure and photographic documentation of the reinforcing bar patterns used in the bridge allowed a comparative analysis between Turner’s original design of the bridge, the bridge as-built, and his patents for concrete reinforcing systems. Large format photography was conducted for Preservation Design Works, LLC, whose discussion of the project can be found in Structure Magazine.
